Why is your business called SmilingTree Writing?

When I started looking for freelance work, I had a full time job and had read several books and blogs about freelancing. I wanted to specialize and have my own niche, and I wanted it to be in an area I care deeply about and where I felt I could make a difference. After much list-making I decided to go with companies interested in sustainability such as solar companies, geothermal companies, farmers, artists, and so on.

I named the business SmilingTree because all the trees are – in my imagination, at least -  happy about human conservation and sustainability efforts.

As my business grew and unfolded, most of my clients turned out to be very small business owners from the local community who see the value in strong copy and online marketing but don’t have the time or the inclination or the knowledge to put it all in practice. Since the imaginary trees are still happy about sustainability efforts, I kept the name.

What do you write?

I write content for web sites, brochures, sales materials, newsletters and almost anything else. Most businesses need written material that explains exactly what they do and why it’s important so that people will buy from them. Some businesses give their customers a little extra, useful information in the form of blogs or newsletters.

Before a customer takes out her wallet she needs to know what sort of problem you are going to solve. I will tell her – clearly, succinctly and in the language of your brand. Better copy = more sales.

I am happy to help you figure out which social media services might be good for your business, and in some cases, am happy to help you manage your presence on them. If I can’t help you manage them, I can help you learn how to do it yourself.
